Final Project Proposal

Please post a 3 to 5 sentence project proposal as a comment to this post below. Be sure to include: a topic that will be the focus of your project, the form your project will take (game, video, ice sculpture), and a narrative of how to you plan to address your topic through the project (as a story, or documentary, or game, or philosophical treatise). If you are working with a partner, then be sure to include their name(s) on the proposal and explain the division of labor (remember your reading of Adam Smith in seminar). Also, come up with a provisional title for your project.

  1. Alyssa Collier and I would like to partner together in order to compose our final project. We would like to partake in a project focusing on the advertisements of food and how they make them look extremely appealing however once you order the food they are not nearly as large and flavorful as you imagined. We want to also explore how the food advertisements use sexualized women to advertise their burgers (for example Carl’s Jr.) and make them give you the “I must have that now” idea in commercials. We would be putting together a video with slides of pictures and clips of commercials to better display this idea.

  2. Audrey Chase and I would like to partner together in order to compose our final project. We would like to partake in a project focusing on the advertisements of food and how they make them look extremely appealing however once you order the food they are not nearly as large and flavorful as you imagined. In order to capture this idea we would be putting together clips from advertisements and commercials. We want to also explore how the food advertisements use sexualized women to advertise their burgers (for example Carl’s Jr.) and make them give you the “I must have that now” idea in commercials. Audrey and I would be splitting up the work by each finding our own clips that display this idea then coming to an agreement on which clips to show case and which not then together we would be working on putting together these ads and commercials. A possible title could be “Don’t Feed the Models” or “The Make Up of Food” Audrey and I will deliberate on the title as well.

  3. “Anarchic Order: The Culture and Mythology of Twitch Plays Pokémon Red”

My project will focus on the recent social experiment “Twitch Plays Pokemon Red”. Twitch Plays Pokemon (or TPP) is an online phenomenon in which thousands of players across the internet attempted to wrestle for control of Nintendo’s single-player Game Boy game. With an interactive eBook, I will use text, images, fan-made art, fan-made music, and video to explain the game and present the social dynamics that arose from it, including the stories its players created as a result of seemingly-random events. I will also attempt to incorporate academic views of crowdsourcing to explain the strength of the public “hive mind”. It will be in 3 parts: 1. The raw events of TPP and its background; 2. the players’ reactions; and 3. an analysis on these reactions.

  4. For my final project, Taylor Neill and I will be collaborating on a video project. This project will focus on the idea of advancements in technology and media, and the effect it has on people. We will pull videos from youtube and edit them to create one video. These videos will show technology from its earliest form, for example the printing press, to it’s most current and maybe future form (i.e. google glasses). Disbursed throughout these clips will be other clips of people talking about technology. For example we may show a clip of the first ever cell phone and someone being really excited about it thinking its the best thing since sliced bread. We will also have clips of people talking about their obsession with technology, how they are completely consumed with it and what it has to offer. We will collaborate on all aspects, but for the most part Taylor will be doing a lot of the story boarding and conceptualization of the project. I will be doing more of the technical work like sound and video editing.

  5. For our final project this semester, our title will be called “Digitalized Comedy”. Araceli and I will be focusing on our final project on how stand up comedy has been influenced by digital media. We will choose four currently popular stand up comedians (men and women) and look at how they use social media, television, etc. as their medium for their comedy. Our final project will be related to our Digital Media class by focusing on the various digital mediums used in stand up comedy. The format will be a video of comedians use of digital media, within the context of the themes we’ve learned in class.

“Babe I will kill you”; An Analysis of the Psychological and Sociological Effects of Our Dependency on Technology

The subject we will be covering that was already discussed in class was the Frankenstein presentation. The Frankenstein book highlighted the idea that once the technology is created it cannot be uncreated. In addition the Frankenstein book is also a metaphor for how pervasive technology is in all of our lives today and how important it is to us on a second to second basis. Because of this importance we will observe and document by filming people in their most natural setting and their reaction to the action of taking technology away, and compare it to their reaction of taking other objects away (i.e a pencil or a paper). In an interview and documentary style we will observe their reaction and interview the participants afterwards inquiring about their feelings and opinions to their reaction.

  7. Kelsey Freeman and I will be creating a video using a combination of coding and filming to argue the active involvement of social media in our world today has instigated a more conscious and involved society. Through the convergence of culture and collective identity within knowledge communities, individuals have the opportunity to utilize technology through social media as means to address and motivate the sort of active citizen in our world today. As Resnick states, “If a person has only a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail. Indeed, a person’s perceptions and models of the world are strongly shaped by the objects that exist in the world” (44). Though many populations around the globe may not be utilizing the same sort of medium to instigate and involve their own citizens for the impact of social change, first-world civilizations have found social media as a lens for outreach and motivation.
We will be using a creative approach in our media presentation as a sort of story-telling short documentary that supports active media participation and praises technology for the awareness that it’s brought upon the millennial generation, or generation Y.

  8. For my Final Project I would like to create a game using Scratch. This game will be inspired by the idea of simulation and artificial intelligence. The game will be a simulation of a real world situation. The game is inspired the idea that simulations can help cope with real world trauma.

  9. Ivan Ibarra and I will be doing our final project based on the idea of simulated travel. We will use Scratch to make the location simulations (ie. London, Paris, New York, Rome, etc.) and then embed them into a Google Maps platform. The idea is that you will be able to click on the city on Google Maps and be transported to a virtual city modeled after the most famous cities and the world as a form of virtual travel.

  10. Sai and I will be documenting a character living in a microworld. We will be creating a story that integrates the idea of microworlds. We are not sure what specifically in microworlds we will be looking at but we want to use that concept.

  11. The final project our group chose to do was the explanation of internet blogs throughout time. For example when the blogs were created and how they formed to where they are today. The time period for the project is going to range from the 1990’s through the present day.
